Standard 5.5: Annual Follow-up

A follow-up system should be used to determine students' employment location and for feedback regarding the efficiency, effectiveness, and appropriateness of training. The follow-up procedure should be designed to assure feedback regarding needed additions to or deletions from the training curriculum, program, and tools and equipment. Follow-up of graduates employed outside of the automobile industry should indicate reasons for non-automobile employment. When applicable, this information should be used to modify the training quality and/or content.

Requirements:

  1. Rate the annual formal follow-up system used to determine students' employment location.
  2. Rate the annual follow-up procedure used to obtain student assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of their training.
  3. Rate the annual follow-up procedure in terms of obtaining feedback regarding needed additions or deletions to the training:
    1. curriculum
    2. program
    3. tools and equipment
  4. Rate the annual follow-up system used to obtain information from program graduates who are employed outside of the automotive industry.
  5. Rate the use of the information from annual follow-up procedures to modify the training program.
  6. Does the Advisory Committee review the information from the annual follow-up procedure and provide input for modifications to the training program?

Recommended Documentation:

  • Provide an explanation of the follow-up system used to identify where students are employed after graduation. Indicate who performs the follow-up, and discuss when and how students are contacted (e.g., by phone, written survey, etc.). If the process used in Standard 1.1B can determine graduate employment and employment location a reference back to 1.1B would be acceptable.
  • Provide documentation on the process used to obtain graduates' qualitative assessment of their training. Example: phone, mail, e-mail, personal interview. Include who is responsible.
  • A blank copy of the survey/questionnaire used by the program needs to be included in the documentation. The survey needs to provide input in the areas of curriculum, program, and tools and equipment.
  • Provide an explanation of how feedback is obtained from students employed outside of the industry. If a questionnaire is used, describe when and how it is distributed, and how the questionnaires are collected and tabulated. Include a copy of the questionnaire.
  • Statement explaining how information from follow-up procedures is used to modify/improve the training program.
  • The follow-up process is required annually and does require that the Advisory Committee reviews this information and make recommendations on program modifications. (Go/No Go)

Additional Notes:

  • Standard 1.1 only references the percentage of employment, and not all procedures would allow for the gathering of employment location. It is important that the explanation of procedures used in both standards is well documented.
  • If during the process the graduates are asked to provide information on the efficiency and effectiveness of their training, then that documentation needs to reflect the connection between standards.
  • Include a blank copy of the survey. Surveys without graduates personal information such as name, addres or phone are easier to copy and share with the Advisory Committee for their review.
  • Information about graduates employeed outside the industry is very valuable to all involved with the program. Graduates employed outside the industry may have tried to secure employment, but were unsuccessful for reasons unknown by the school.
  • This information should be shared with the administration and the Advisory Committee. The graduate is your customer and feedback from the graduate will assist the program in ensuring that the program continues to make improvements.
