Standard 6.8: Safety Standards
Safety instruction should be given prior to lab/shop work and be an integral part of the training program. A safety test should be included in the training program. Students and instructors should comply with personal and environmental safety practices associated with clothing; eye protection; hand tools; power equipment; proper ventilation and the handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals/materials in accordance with local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations.
Requirements:
- Rate the safety instruction given prior to lab/shop work.
- Rate the importance placed on safety instruction as a part of the training program.
- Rate the importance of including safety tests in the training program.
- Rate the emphasis placed on complying with safety practices in the lab/shop area.
Recommended Documentation:
- Statement explaining the safety education provided before students begin hands-on work in the lab. Also discuss the way safe shop procedures are incorporated into the technical education for each specialty area.
- Copy of the lesson plans which describe the safety education provided.
- Copy of the safety test, which a student must pass in order to continue in the program. Note minimum acceptable score.
- Statement identifying where safety posters and warning signs are posted. The on-site evaluation team will be looking to see that safety areas are marked with highly visible red or yellow lines on the floors and/or walls. Make sure that fire extinguishers and exits are clearly marked, and that no clutter is allowed to accumulate that would impede access to them.
