Standard 7.8: Hand Tools

Each student should have access to basic hand tools comparable to tools required for employment. Students should be encouraged to purchase a hand tool set during the period of instruction.

Requirements:

  1. Rate the availability of hand tools for students' use during lab/shop instruction, comparable to the tools that will be required for employment.
  2. Rate the emphasis placed on encouraging students to purchase a hand tool set (during the period of instruction) which is appropriate to the specialty area(s) in which they are being trained.

Recommended Documentation:

  • Statement describing the availability of hand tools for student use during lab/shop instruction, comparable to the tools that will be required for employment.
  • Statement in the notebook describing the policy (if any) requiring that a student purchase personal hand tools, or the ways in which your school encourages the student to purchase tools. If your Advisory Committee helps to underwrite tools, or if your school negotiates agreements with employer/sponsors of students, be sure to include copies of such agreements.
  • Copy of any agreement your school may have with a tool vendor to provide tools to your students.
  • Copy of required tool list if applicable.
  • Inventory of hand tools available for student use and location to facilitate on-site inspection.
