The facilities should meet all applicable safety standards and an emergency plan should be in place and posted in all classrooms and lab/shop areas.

Requirements:

  1. Rate the identification of hazardous areas (painting, welding, etc.) with signs.
  2. Rate the fire extinguishers in terms of having regular, current inspection tags attached and meeting fire codes for different types of fires.
  3. Rate the availability of an electrical disconnect system or posted procedure to shut down all outlets in case of an emergency.
  4. Rate the lighting in terms of being adequate for task performance and safety.
  5. Rate safety inspections in terms of being regularly held.
  6. Rate the degree to which all other applicable safety standards are met.
  7. Rate the identification of vehicle traffic areas.

Recommended Documentation:

  1. Document the identification methods and where hazardous areas in the lab/shop area are located.
  2. Explain when inspections of fire extinguishers are preformed and who does the inspections. Include information or lessons used to explain to the students the different types of fires and chemical used to fight these fires.
  3. Explain the process and/or procedure used to disconnect electrical power from the lab/shop area.
  4. During your annual facility evaluation with the advisory committee, have them rate the quality of the lighting in the lab/shop area.
  5. Explain who and when safety inspections of the lab/shop area are performed.
  6. Explain the procedure used to ensure that all safety standards are being met.
  7. Traffic lanes should be clearly marked.
