About the Grant
Upgrading the Nation's Automotive Programs
Upgrading the Nation's Automotive Programs seeks to increase the number of industry-certified schools and the capacity of automotive training programs by increasing the number of NATEF/ASE certified programs. The program addresses key automotive workforce issues identified in the President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative. NATEF is the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation and ASE is the National Institute of Automotive Excellence.
The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor-Employment and Training Administration October, 2004 to Gateway Technical College, Snap-on, Inc., The Foundation of the Wisconsin Automobile & Truck Dealers, NATEF/ASE, Melior, and the National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers.
Gateway Technical College in Southeastern Wisconsin, Snap-on Inc., headquartered in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and several other automotive industry organizations have developed a program for national distribution, Preparing for the NATEF/ASE Evaluation, that will guide instructors and training centers through the certification process and help instructors maintain certification.
This grant has two other components.
- NATEF certification requires self evaluation, followed by a site visit by an Evaluation Team Leader (ETL). The grant covers updated training for current and future ETLs, revised self evaluation, and site visit changes.
- Consultation to the Department of Labor Job Corps Centers designed to help all 43 of the Centers’ automotive training programs become NATEF-certified.
Following the conclusion of the three-year grant, the partnership among many of the grant participants continues through Gateway Technical College's Horizon Center for Transportation Technology, developed to increase the quality and quantity of highy skilled automotive technicians.
